Actually, the I5 prototypes were built in Germany. I have proof of a 92 or maybe 93 red Vanagon from Hannover. It was a right hand drive version with a I5, straight from the factory. This one was owned by a guy I know (not a friend, but a friend of a friend). Back then, I did not know him (what a pity) If I knew what I could get there, I would have bought it.

Anyway, this was around 2000, when this prototype was sold to the "public". It had the "regular" style, not the facelift with larger windows that the SA version had.

A similar (or maybe the same) was offered in a german VW magazine later. You know the Last Limited Editions? Orlyblue and tornado red, each one with a unique number "XXX out of 2500". Number 2500 can be found in the VW museum...

The 5cyl version was 2549 of 2500. I donīt believe this for a minute, but thatīs was I was told. Iīd bet this one had no number...
