My wife flew north to meet me for vacation after a sales meeting and while picking her up at the Newark airport the (not a Vanagon) trunk was broken into and tools/miscellaneous stolen.  No witnesses and we had to pay parking for the extra two hours waiting it took for the cops to respond and take the report.
 
A couple of hours later in NYC while parked at the curb to check into the hotel someone broke out the driver's side rear window to take a box of sales brochures from the back seat, ignoring other items in the car.  For insurance purposes they were two separate incidents with two deductibles.
 
Point: you NEVER win at this kind of thing (unless you are armed and catch the perp in the act) so try your best to leave it behind after venting.  The idiot who did it does not know a Vanagon from Vanilla Ice and does not care.  Sorry it happened to you and may it never happen again, but it has to us.
