I'll bet that's what happened.

Having tried my hand at manufacturing, I can attest to the importance of sticking with proven methods/procedures. i.e. hand planing a bronze brazed seam in the wrong "order". ...... "Crack"..... "d-oh!"

I still have my old gas tank. Kind of in the way, but might be useful for my next Vanagon.
