It is an extraordinary feeling of satisfaction to own and operate a Vanagon, especially a Westy, with a strong engine. I have enjoyed a lot of that from my 84 GL. My 83.5 Westy is a totally different story. I bought it used and its engine was pretty much ruined at as early as 30k miles young. I bought it with only 60k+ miles on the original engine for $2500 from a friend who simply wanted to give it up.

Over the years its engine was rebuilt by a dealer once, and by me twice. The last rebuild was a year ago. It was a successful rebuild eventually. Now it's the 84 GL's turn to get its engine rebuilt. Then there came the idea of getting a 2.1 core to rebuild instead of rebuilding the original 1.9. Further more, if I do rebuild a 2.1 I will put it on the 83.5 Westy. Then install the already rebuilt 1.9 from the Westy on the 84. The extra 500 lbs weight on the Westy will benefit from the extra 10 HP from the 2.1. This was the reason behind my mind for looking for a 2.1 core. I found one and got it yesterday.

Yes, a strong engine is what I intend to achieve. I am willing to take a few months to get it done correctly and carefully. I will keep the list posted of my progress. I will probably ask many questions too.

Thanks.

David
