Thanks for the replies, everyone.
What I am planning on doing is wiring the (non-hidden) outlet so that it can
be run off an inverter from the battery. I know the way people often do
this is by splitting the outlet so that one is shore power, one is
inverter. I'd rather have them both switchable between the two. I'm
thinking of getting one of these for this purpose:

I guess I'm going to have to do something so that it *doesn't* power the
hidden outlet, though, since that's where I'm planning on putting my battery
charger, which I plan to just always leave in the on position, so that it
comes on whenever there's shore power. I don't really want to be charging
the battery off the battery through an inverter, after all!
What I was referring to as far as the gasket is that
now-dried-and-disintegrating piece of foam between the plastic outlet and
the wall of the van that is supposed to keep moisture from entering from
outside.
