With the transfer switch I linked to, the switching is done automatically, not manually, so I think there shouldn't be any risk.

That said, having the two totally separate is something I'm considering as well. Did you install a separate outlet for yours, or do you just plug into the one built into the inverter? One thing I'm really unclear on at this point is the best way to go from the the built-in outlets in the inverter to hard-wired connections needed for a switch like the one above, or even just a wall-style outlet.
