Mine did the same thing about a year ago. I was 1,000 miles from home and what I did to get back was tap the inside of the shifter tube on both sides of the break, and use a length of threaded rod to hold it together. It was sloppy because I could not get it tight together and it wanted to rotate, but it was good enough to get home on.

I "fixed" mine after I got home by replacing the threaded rod with a cut-off section of grade 8 bolt, then welded around the break and ground it smooth.

While this failure is not exactly common, it's certainly not unheard-of.
