Hi Mike,
I have a 94 model, Sony CDX-U6260
That I just finished wiring into my 87.
yes, there is a little switch on
The bottom or the unit to turn off the face lights.
( Whether my battery will hold up or not is yet to be seen :o)
I also wired in a switch to turn
The stereo on when the Ign is off.
(1 amp fused red wire switch - 15 amp fused yellow wire 12v+ )
It's a cool little switch with a blue
Light in the stem & it's 12v 30 amp.
Got it at Checker Auto for what 10 bucks or something.
I thought the light would remind me to turn it off when through.
I also am using a 1000 amp
X-4040 Amp with it.
I installed this under the front DS seat
Four nice after market speakers (bluapunk if I'm spelling that correctly :o)
And two Pioneer 10 inch Subs in their own boxes,(6"thick)
that sit in front of the rear seat.
They are removable with 8ft chords
So I can set them out for camping.
Or hanging out at the drum circle. ;o)
Along with a new deep cycle battery,
I bought from Walmart.
(Actually, I got it for $14!
I traded one in I bought almost three years ago to the day
For their free 3 year replacement!
Just make sure you do this on a Saturday morning
When the Real boss isn't working !!! ;o)
Now I need to wire in the
Surepower 1315 I just received in the mail!
And, I need to figure out how
To use my Ipod with it ???
The stereo has what Sony calls a Unilink
That may or may not work
Also, two RCA plugs
That I've bought a cord to try with.
If not, an FM wired transmitter, maybe a
Harman Kardon Play +2 or such.
I've had this stereo since 94
And, I've got to say, It's served me well !!!
Many trips & I've yet to leave the farm !!! ;o)
Spilled a half bottle of Jack on it
And it Still plays like a champ !!!! hee hee hee ;o)

Ay, there's the rub.
There is no accessory position on a Vanagon, so it's either wired so
you have to have the ignition on to play the radio (which is bad for
the ignition, in addition to drawing more power), or it's on all the
time. Which is "proper?"
I wired an "accessory" switch so I could play it when the ignition is
off. Another suggestion which has been made is to wire the radio's
switched lead to the switch in the ignition which controls the door
buzzer, then you can use the radio as long as the key is in, but don't
have to turn the key on.
