Well as a 20 year old who's currently looking at driving my van cross country for the summer and has some road tripping experience, i would say let him take it if YOU are confident in it. More often than not I end up second guessing everything but my policy is "if i'd be comfortable driving it 100 miles, 3000 isn't too different".

From personal experience, Vanagons have sufficient places to puke out of. Those sliding side windows are great. Change the oil, give it a once over, be confident in it, and send it on it's way!
