Subject: Sometimes the vanagon gremlins don't know they are helping...
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Last week I replaced the so-called "relay" that controls the blinking temp gauge light under Mark Drillock's guidance. The wild swings that the temp gauge was making upon starting up on freezing mornings were gone right away, only to be replaced by flaky bizzaro-world blinking that I won't rehash. But in the past week, the unwanted erratic behavior has morphed into some very positive behavior, namely that my turn signal indicator started working again for the first time in three years. At first, it only worked with the headlights off. Today, on a 250 mile drive, they began working with the headlights on. I still get the occasional weird blinking light after warmup, but a flick of the key off and back on will cure it.

It's obvious that the vanagon gremlins, while very powerful, aren't really intelligent enough to know if they are being destructive or helpful. Like my two year old grand-devils, they simply try everything they can without considering the consequences.

I'm sure what's going on now is a ground issue, and that improvement will be tackled next. I have to say that it is nice to have turn signal indication again. Thank you, gremlins.

Jim
