Adrian, the Quantum will give you 1 forwards speeds and 5 going in reverse unless you can find a way to make the engine spin backwards or flip the ring gear to the other side of the trans. Or maybe get really crazy and put a backwards (to the rest of the world) spinning Honda motor. Daryl at aatransaxle.com said there is no room to flip the ring gear in the Audi trans. I'm guessing the same for the Quantum.

The bellhousing is integral to the transmission housing as can be seen here. Go to page 9 of the manual to see a drawing of the trans.

See above. The rear engine carrier can be bought from VW in South Africa. same can be said for the correct bellhousing. Some folks are very apprehensive about buying from Vanamania but I know they have replicas of the SA 5-cyl rear engine carriers. I am not endorsing a particular vendor. Just want to present the availability of the parts as I saw in person.

IIRC, the 5-cyl's are mounted at 23.5° vs. 50° for the 4-cyls. That also means the rear deck will need to be taller unless you modify the intake manifold as I had seen folks like Detlev Hanschke (Livermore, California) has done.

Overland Parts, Inc. still has some of their 5-cyl conversion kits available but pricey for sure because the parts such as the engine are new (vs. used). If you are not in California, they offer a kit w/ the SA induction system & Cali exhausts for nearly half the price. The Cali kits require replacement of induction system from a California certified system from a Eurovan or s something similar from what I was told. Again, this is not an endorsement of the vendor or product. See your OPI dealer for further info. Details at:
