Subject: 85 vanagon throttle body swap... top mounted vs bottom mounted
              TPS ????
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

Hi Volks,

I checked the archives but have not seen a complete answer to this question. ETKA diagrams don't seem to answer it either.

My Dad's 1985 automatic sunroof vanagon has been having problems with the throttle linkage. Apparently the problem is at the throttle body. This morning it hung up at high RPMS and would not dislodge until the engine lid was lifted and the lever reset by hand. Once it was reset, everything was fine. I suspect that the brass butterfly is rubbing against the aluminum casing and the friction has become enough to overcome the tension of the return spring.

I have a spare 1.9L engine with a throttle body that is in very good condition. Unfortunately, the TB on the sunroof van has the throttle position switches underneath, and this TB has the TPS located on top.

BEFORE we pull it all apart... is it possible/practical to swap these units, or should we plan to repair the original TB instead?

Happy Trails,
