Why you wire it that way? And the Vanagon DOES have a switched wiring
circuit. It's the X circuit as shown in the wiring diagrams.

Stock radios might not use the X circuit (and it's not on the stock
wiring to a factory radio) , but a lot of after market stuff is better
off using it and it's not that hard to get to.
