Ohhhh, I just *love* an oil discussion. So, I'll fan the flames here: I don't run synthetic in our 2.1. Too expensive for any perceived benefit. I use good old Delo 400 15W-40. Why? Since I started using Delo 400, there is been *no* lifter noise. Plus, Delo 400 still has Zinc in it. Zinc isn't that important on newer vehicles, but I feel it's important on our "old" WBXs. Zinc is the last line of defense in the case of metal-on-metal. The cam and lifters come to mind. I've been using Delo 400 in our VW diesels as well. So, one oil for all three of our Vanagons.
