I know it's a strange title but read on: Tonight there was a loud knocking on the front door-it was my neighbor, who told me my Vanagon was down the street. It was the 82 with the frozen engine. I walked down to where it stopped expecting the worst because I could see behind it was a nice looking Jeep. When I got to the rear of the vanagon, it was up against three huge trash containers, the kind thew garbage truck lifts up. Nothing was damaged. How lucky is that!? The Vanagon rolled backwards about 100 yards down and across the street, if the garbage cans hadnt been there, the van would have crashed into the Jeep. I remember stories like this have been told before on this list, but without such happy endings. This is my friend Jack's fault. You don't know Jack- he's not a Vanagon owner, but builds sand rails using Vanagon and Bus transmissions. He was trying to help me break the seized motor free, and asked if the handbrake was set. It was , I said, asking what that has to do with it? Apparently he went up and released the handbrake while I was in the garage, I don't know why. But that was at six. Sometime in the last 5 hours it rolled backwards. It's very windy tonight- the wind must have helped get it rolling. Robert 1982 Westfalia |
