Ellen - not mentioned in all this - and you may have surmised - but the light on the dash and the button on the black box are in no physical way connected to the O2 sensor. They are connected only in the sense that there is a counter in the box and when it counts up to 60,000 miles (30,000) on the older models, the switch in the box turns the light on. And the red light tells you it is time to change the O2 sensor. The O2 sensor won't fail immediately when the light turns on either. You can reset the button, and run it for a few more thousand miles with no problem - but it does tell you that the O2 sensor is nearing it's life limit and it needs servicing.

Hope you have a good trip.

Regards,

John Rodgers 88 GL Driver Chelsea, AL

The button sticks out on the front of the box, the side that has the wires coming out of it that go to the speedometer. It was actually really easy to see, once I got on the right side of the box and scraped off the road grime. Used a smallish screwdriver to push it in. I got an audible click on the second press. It will be a great drive without that red light on! Thanks again for all the help. > > Ellen > > Don't wait for a light to appear at the end of the tunnel; stride down there.....and light the bloody thing yourself." ~Dara Henderson > > > > >> Date: Fri, 6 Mar 2009 13:49:54 -0500 >> To: elleninoregon@HOTMAIL.COM >> From: dbeierl@attglobal.net >> Subject: Re: Chick Magnets & that pesky OXS light >> CC: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM >> >> At 01:37 PM 3/6/2009, Ellen wrote: >> >>> is a specific procedure to reset this, but I can't find it now. >>> >> Crawl underneath the left front wheel and find a box with the >> speedometer cable passing through it from the wheel.
