Ellen - not mentioned in all this - and you may have surmised - but the
light on the dash and the button on the black box are in no physical way
connected to the O2 sensor. They are connected only in the sense that
there is a counter in the box and when it counts up to 60,000 miles
(30,000) on the older models, the switch in the box turns the light on.
And the red light tells you it is time to change the O2 sensor. The O2
sensor won't fail immediately when the light turns on either. You can
reset the button, and run it for a few more thousand miles with no
problem - but it does tell you that the O2 sensor is nearing it's life
limit and it needs servicing.
Hope you have a good trip.

The button sticks out on the front of the box, the side that has the wires coming out of it that go to the speedometer. It was actually really easy to see, once I got on the right side of the box and scraped off the road grime. Used a smallish screwdriver to push it in. I got an audible click on the second press. It will be a great drive without that red light on! Thanks again for all the help.
