Re: "Where I went to high school in Minot ND....... I always noticed how freezing cold it felt in the car , like you expect to > be a little warm and sheltered just by getting into in a car..... And sitting overnight outside at 10 degrees F or whatever, even colder.........it always seemed even colder to get in the car when it's been sitting, even colder than standing outside properly dressed. btdt"

First rule of the Arctic for someone stranded with a broken car wrecked airplane, etc. Do NOT use the vehicle for shelter, cold metal is terrible insulation but a terrific cold sink. A good snow cave will keep you a lot more warm than sitting in a cold metal can, err.....car. You can use the vehicle as a windbreak but should not use it as a place to stay. A good snow cave will be 30 - 40 degrees warmer than outside ambient and you can use the seat cushions, carpeting, etc, to make it more comfortable.

Now back to our regular programming though this information is pertinent to anyone operating in cold climates.
