Just to be clear. Here's what I used as reference to my mention of a filter:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=277727&highlight=fuel+pump

About 1/2 way down page is a post from "Pushkick" showing the inside (cutaway) of a tank from a "1990 vw 2.1L camper". ( I assume this means a Vanagon Westfalia)

It was kindly brought to my attention that an '84 tank does not have this. So my caveat here is that I don't know which model years used this setup or if it's aftermarket or not.

Neil.
