I guess to my uninformed self, it seems that the failure mode for most of these tires is focused on the sidewall, and especially the extra tall sidewall of a 70 to 75 series 14" tire. I would theorize that my 50/55 series sidewalls are less prone to flex and bulge issues that either blow out or separate from the rim. My van is primarily used as a local people/junk/lumber/hardware hauler. I try to never travel any more than 60 miles (to IKEA) in the thing, 'cause I have other more comfortable cruisers for such things. I do routinely drive @ 70-75 mph, though. And I like to flog this beasty around corners, especially now that my rear stays glued to the road rather than sliding out like my old 14" Uniroyals (with proper load rating).
