Several years ago I removed the transmission from my '85 and replaced the main seal and clutch (along with a few other things). This was done in my driveway and with a couple of ordinary floor jacks.

Would I do it again ... or take it to a mechanic? I would certainly do it again. None of my Vanagons has ever been to a mechanic and I've been driving one of them since '91. The '85 Westy I got in 2002.

Mike
