When i replaced this on my engine i was going to use the seal supplied in the engine gasket set but was advised that i needed the "right" one from VW. I purchased the VW OEM one and i vividly recall it being a different thickness..... but that's just me. That is the reason i was told i needed it.

I don't know that you can sand off material from the seal....
