I know lots of Canadians were finding bargains on US vehicles and bringing them across the border last year when the US and Canadian dollar were close to even. People I know bought vehicles in the US, drove to the border where they arranged to pay any duty and taxes, then they proceeded to a "certified safety check" to make sure everything met Canadian and Provincial safety codes. Things that were missing (like day time running lights) were added a small fee was paid then you went and bought plates and insurance as required by the province you were moving the vehicle to.

Canada will let you bring in almost anything. Look at all the mini Japanese trucks with right hand steering that are appearing. See http://www.japaneseminitrucks.ca/
