Thanks to all, including John, Angus, and especially Darryl (our discussion was very helpful), and to Mark and others on my previous post regarding transmission types vs codes, I appreciate the advice immensely.   I am having the tranny rebuilt locally and (at least somewhat) professionally.  New bearings/syncs, first gear, a 1-2 slider, seals, etc. all or most from Long Enterprises. This is not inexpensive by any means but tranny work is not something I would tackle in case anyone was thinking that I was thinking of doing it myself.   Oh, and you guys convinced me that Redline MT-90 was the way to go.  But I'm going to let them put in their whatever GL-4 and replace it after 500 miles.  I'll try to go look at the open case tomorrow if I can, and will get the westy back sometime next week if all goes well.   Someone mentioned flushing the tranny at fluid change, any recommendations with that?  I have not done that before.

ok, at the risk of starting a fistfight, I am having my 4-speed 091 transaxle rebuilt.  Any opinions on lubricant for this?  I am not big on synthetics because they are not "backward compatible".   This transaxle would not go into or stay in first gear.  second gear holds great but getting there is sometimes a little "iffy".  no other known problems, but what should I think about having done while the case is open that a rebuilder may not neccessarily do without asking?  Is replacing 4th gear still an issue (popping out when worn)?  special synch rings?  anything special?
