On my old VW Beetle, I fried one iPod and one cell phone charging directly from the lighter. Not through an inverter. Is an inverter safer? One fried when I started the car. It seemed like there was an energy surge at the time.

Personally I wouldn't risk it again. I am going to buy one of those units from Canadian Tire that you charge, and then plug into it directly. Seems more 'stable.' Can you tell I'm technologically challenged.
