The short cable that goes from the solenoid into the starter is made of very fine strands of copper. It can corrode away to dust is there is a lot of salt water spray in the winter. When that happens the starter has to be rebuilt and the field coils replaced because that cable starts from those coils. BTDT Protect that cable with a thick layer of grease or anything better you can think of.
