First off, the shift linkage on pre '83 vanagons is totally different. I don't know if you can use the older transmission with the newer style linkage though.... Furthermore, the gearing is very different. I don't know if it would be desireable for a WBX engine. I believe the front transmission mount is totally different as well. You'd have to mount the earlier style mount.
