I've heard excellent things about ones Dennis Haynes has built.

And I've used the South African one from Bus Depot (VW-OEM IIRC), which is a massive round tube with a massive long bar at right angles on each end that fits inside the bumper, replacing the bumper mounts and tie-down loops. It extends farther into the big fore-and-aft beams than the bumper mounts do, but the necessary bolt hole is already there. Its only snag is that it ends in a vertical plate with four bolt holes, to which is bolted a massive forging with an integral two-inch ball (pretty sure you could hang the whole van up by it if you wanted to). So if you want a smaller ball, or a receiver, you'll need to have someone local fab one up for you, as I did, to bolt up to the plate. I got a fair smack in the rear with mine from a kid who forgot to stop -- it deflected about a quarter inch in the middle.
