OK..Here is more said. I can get long winded at times, sooo... I am not tooting just MY own horn here..Just stating the facts that we professionals deal with. I am not the only fish in the tranny sea. I like what I do and have been in the VW world for 35 yrs. The guys in Calif and Ken at German Trans are in the same boat as I am. The tough part of these aging trannys is that it takes an experienced eye to see the little wear points and have a system in place to replace/repair them. There are lots of creative guys out there who can build one. Don't get me wrong. I sell parts to quite a few in various places over a years time and there are always some who end up sending me the whole trans after they have tried. Gear sets wear..Shafts wear...cases wear... Its not a matter of just replacing a synchro and a bearing any longer. These parts are not available new for the most part and most 18 to 30+ trannys I see have over 200K on them. I have been stashing pieces and cores for years to be able to keep up. I have been having parts custom made as well. Just rebushing the 1/2 relay lever takes a custom bushing and drilling on a mill to accomplish. Same as the gear housing rebush.. I send 30+ at a time to a machinist to do that job. Seen many that have been gone thru by others with sloppy bearings and lever & stuff..Yes they do work for a while most times..but..YMMV and its not worth it if you have to go back in there a few times to get it figured out. Even us pro's have parts issues...Pinion bearing are bad occasionally from the factory and unless you know the correct feel of the preload..it will likely fail. Even if it fels right..It may go bad after a year..Ask me how I know this...(no, dont) Brand new sliders and gears can even pop out of gear..new parts and they still don't work right...frustrating but a fact of life in the tranny lane. I aplaud anyone who can get by with a genaric rebuild to save $$ in this economy if neccessary...Just be careful and get your expectations in line with the reality of working on tired equipment...
