There is a switch there similar to the switches in the door jambs for the interior lights. When the parking brake handle goes down it should press on the switch and open the circuit. Yah IIRC, that switch at hand brake on mine looked a little dinky. I too wondered Mikes switch might have failed. And FWIW, looking at Bentley, when the fluid level switch closes, it completes the ground to the brake light causing it to turn on. Same as parking brake light switch.
