My concern with running screws or rivets THROUGH the plastic (if I'm
understanding correctly) and into the steel sleeve is that this could
introduce stresses into the plastic at that point and eventually cause
cracking.  Certainly lots of other 18+ year old plastic on these vans
gets brittle and cracks up with heat and age.
