In my long experience in the trades, I found that most really good craftsmen always had "work-arounds" that they used to bypass just such problems as having to have some manufacturers super high-priced special super-duper Tool No. XXX#9 to unlock the elephants-trunk In fact, when I was a working mechanic for an airlinne based in Atlanta, we had among a number of work-arounds a special shop-built workaround - It was really and truly the answer to the manufacturers tool - a really live key to the elephants trunk - a 5 foot steel rod which on one end had welded to it a blade of a key, and on the other end that handle of the key. That shop-built workaround to bypass Tool No XXX#9 worked every time - totally made the new guy in the shop look like and idiot when asking the tool-room manager for the key to the elephants trunk! Always generated a lot of heehaw and guffaw. But you get the picture. Except on a few occasions, work a rounds do pretty good. But sometimes nothing works but the special tool - like the Sweeney Wrench we used to torque the nut that kept the propeller on the end of the crankshaft on big prop driven aircraft engines. It was a big, solid steel, geared torque wrench. Took a crane to hoist it into place. Once mounted it had the capacity to crank up to #7500 foot lbs of torque.
