Chris, I routinely lift the tail end of my vanagon with my tow loop hitch. That's about 1800 lbs, give or take a bit. If they will support the load going up I can't see why they wouldn't with a downward load.

Those loops are stronger than most people give them credit for. The bolts that hold the hitch on would be my choice for a failure point.
