I have been driving the westy for a few days and the rebuild appears successful. Its so much fun to drive I can't keep myself off the road. It should be good, it cost me almost as much as the car to get it rebuilt properly. And with the tranny ground shiny clean the starter turns over great! Many thanks to all who gave me great advice on this! The major chain rebuilder I sent it to didn't know their (VW) first gear from a shift boot but luckily they sent it to a guy who did. Everything smooth and tight now. Thanks again for all that good advice both here and on the phone, I'm going to save some of these email responses in my own archive for later review. You guys are awesome. To boot, for those who's tranny might break down in the central Texas area I may have a good small repair shop to refer to. I'll start asking questions about my next repair issue in a future email. --- On Mon, 3/16/09, AD Felder <dieseldoofus@YAHOO.COM> wrote: From: AD Felder <dieseldoofus@YAHOO.COM> Subject: transmission rebuild To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Date: Monday, March 16, 2009, 9:50 PM
ok, at the risk of starting a fistfight, I am having my 4-speed 091 transaxle rebuilt. Any opinions on lubricant for this? I am not big on synthetics because they are not "backward compatible". This transaxle would not go into or stay in first gear. second gear holds great but getting there is sometimes a little "iffy".......... |
