I once read an engine rebuilding book. The author of the book specifically warned that the engine needs to be operating in a proper temperature to keep at minimum cylinder wear. It is also the reason the engine needs to be brought up to the operating temperature as fast as possible. The author gave an example that the very first cylinder right behind the cooling fan behind the radiator always suffer more wear than all other cylinders. It is the cylinder that is always cooler than other cylinders.

I believe the proper operating temperature for the engine is as Scott said 190 degree F.
