Remove the seat from the swivel base first.
To do this look closely at the base of the seat by the leaver that allows you to move it forward and back on the rails. Just by this lever is a stop that is actually spring loaded. When the seat is as far as it will go forward look and you will see the little stop I'm referring to and if you lift it up over the stop while pulling forward the seat will slide off of the rails all of the way then you can rotate the base all of the way and remove the second batt.
There might be some plastic shims in the rails that might fall off when you slide it off of the rails so just watch for those. Putting it back is the same procedure in reverse.
I've removed the front seats from the van and use them out of the van as real comfortable chair when camping!
Have fun!

Subject: Backup Battery access '81 Vanagon?
Hey All,
Sorry, a Vanagon Newbie question:
I am having issues accessing the backup battery in my 1981 Vanagon under
the driver's seat. Is there a trick to this? I have tried sliding the
Driver's seat all the way forward and back, and turning it on the swivel
in every direction I can figure out. The problem lies in the fact that
the steering wheel is in the way of a 180 degree rotation, as I found
the access works on the passenger side.
Do I need to take the entire chair assembly off in order to access that
panel? If there is a trick to turning this chair around, I would really
appreciate any feedback!
Cheers,
James
