Yes I grew up owning bay window and split window vw's always kinda not liking the vanagon and thinking it was stupid and ugly. then I did some research on the Westfalia camping interior and its layout. It sleeps 4 has a working fridge, stove, yes the van has a more reliable water cooled engine and for that it also has a rear and front heater core (good heat) Power steering, A/C, and the list goes on and on. Now I'm hooked and own a 2WD dreaming of one day owning (did I mention they have a 4WD?) Syncro......... Love my van don't get me wrong I to still love the bay and split window...... I think you have to own one and then the question will be fully reviled.....

I'm old. It's old. We go together. Beyond that - I love the power
steering - reduces stress on my ulnar nerves in my elbows and my carpel
tunnel. And then there is the heat, and the air conditioning, the
quieter, smoother, softer ride, the lower noise level, the more
comfortable seating for wide butts, the greater width and carrying
capacity like the 1000 lbs of plaster I hauled inside, and the 12 foot
step ladder that I fitted inside with the hatch closed, and the 4X8
sheets of plywood that fit inside, and the wide comfortable bed in back
hat I have to sleep on when traveling, and the ease of access to service
the engine without having to stand on a stool to reach over the fenders
and down into the engine compartment to change spark plugs, and the big
hatch door to keep the rain off when working on the engine when it's
raining.
These are reasons I love my Vanagon. My kids rag me about it. But I told
them -"When my day arrives - dig out a big hole in the back 40, strap me
in the seat of my Vanagon with the seat belt and shoulder harness, and
roll us into the hole together!!"
