Buses are cool for the "smiles per hour" factor but the actual driving down the road is not much fun for the driver. You have a very squirrely steering and suspension system, sound deadening is pretty much non-existant (you get major trash can lid shutting noise every time you shut a door) and the air cooled engines are time bombs (they make the waterboxer seem super reliable in comparison). The 73-83.5 engines are the worst and most expensive/hard the get parts for engines I know of. Bob Donalds did like to rebuild these engines because they were so tricky that after 30 years they would still throw him for a loop now and then. I loved driving around a 66 bus that I restored for a guy a couple of years ago. I took short trips to town and everyone smiled and waved to me. To go farther than 10 miles I take my Vanagon.
