Thank you much Jake! That totally makes sense now.

Another lister kindly pmailed about it being a seal for the "hose", but I wasn't certain if they meant the hard line or the flexible line. I wondered if it wasn't meant as a seal in an application where the flex hose attached to the caliper. Just had the mind-set of "these ATE calipers are for a Vanagon". Possibly they are used on some other vehicle (late Bay?) or with some other type of flex hose setup.
