i removed all the ugly faded brown cracked fake chrome window rubber inserts years ago on my 84 vanagon.. never had a problem with the sides or hatch glass leaking but i did have a problem with the windshield seal leaking.. i just cut the old seal out and put the '88-'91 solid rubber style windshield seal in its place..
