Many thanks to Scott for pointing this out, and also to Daryl for his
excellent clarification.
On the 85 trans that I just swapped into my 89 there WAS the difference in
the boss where the linkage mount locates. I made up a 1/4 inch shim to
compensate and it worked great.
You guys totally SAVED me! countless amounts of my time indeed to go
through all the steps to figure it out.
Thank you!
BTW the new (used) trans runs well.
