I stripped all my old panels of the original plastic and replaced it with a softer leather-like fabric-backed vinyl that is almost exactly the same color as the laminate surfaces on the tables, fridge, and cabinets. I think it looks a little better and sounds a little deader. There is no secret to getting the stuff to stick and stay down tight. DO NOT USE ANY KIND OF CONTACT CEMENT. Spray on, high-temp, automotive or otherwise. The manufacturers are all lying. Go to a wallpaper store and get premixed commercial grade vinyl wallpaper paste and a cheap brush set to apply it. You will never have to think about it again. And it's cheaper than contact cement. The day you put apply and mount the vinyl on the panels, you'll think you've made a mistake (you have a wide, very stiff brush to knock it down on the panel and get the air bubbles out--don't use use wooden roller or you will see the marks... a soft rubber roller is OK) when you see the brush marks mashing into the applied paste. They won't be there in the morning.
