We had a box like that around our water pump at Lake Winnepesaukee when I was a wee lad. We ran the pump a couple hours every few days to fill up the stock tank for our gravity-feed water system. The box made a considerable difference.

When you're shooting for silence, though, it gets harder; because every time you remove 90% of the noise energy, the perceived noise drops by half.

I have heard that some of the little Hondas -- a 350-watter in particular, I think -- have extra quieting and do a pretty good job with it. Not silent, but pretty quiet. Never heard one, so I don't really know what that means in practice.
