DON'T DO IT!!!!! At least not with an ordinary small resistor. I didn't say they were floating, I said that they were BOTH hot to ground, 180 degrees out of phase. If I'm correct, your resistor will be dissipating 4+ watts from either leg to ground.

Again, if I'm correct, and I'll test that later with my little inverter, each leg will be about 57 volts (RMS) to ground. Right now I've got a cat that can't pee, and that takes precedence.

I could well be wrong, but in the meantime make sure you use a power resistor for your test. A 40w incandescent bulb would be favorite...
