See my warning post, but IMO alternative 1 is ok, bearing in mind that an actual short to ground in something plugged into the outlet will likely trash the inverter.

The noise is of *no significance whatever* except to your ears on a silent night, which may be quite significant. A friend and I once spent half an hour trying to track down a strange noise at night on board Scamp. It turned out to be my contact-lens disinfecting container, which used a weak hydrogen peroxide solution with a platinum catalyst to decompose it before morning. It made a bubbling noise so small that I'd never heard it before, except by holding the container up to my ear.
