I'm running a 2.1 on a 1.9 fuel injection system in my 83 Westy that's for sale ......... works fine that way. True,.................... electronic idle control would be nice ........ and since the idle valve and control unit are 'stand-alone' add-on things to a 2.1 harness....... I bet I can get the later electronic idle valve and control unit to work on a 2.1 engine, but still using the 1.9 EFI wiring harness and ECU - 'maybe someday' I'll get around to working on that.

re 'the entire 2.1 cooling system' ......... I did that to my 85 Wolfsburg Weekender - converted it 'completely' to 2.1 cooling system, and to do that you need a few parts out of a 2.1 vanagon ...... like the coolant distributor and various hoses in the transmission area ........it all fits just fine, it's just that you need a few cooling system parts from a 2.1 vanagon. You also can keep the oil cooler if using the 2.1 cooling system ...... though it sure seems the 1.9 cooling system could be modified just a little, to utilize the 2.1 oil cooler.
