If it's just the boot, you'll be pulling off the shaft anyway. Messy yes, but all things being equal, not a lot more work to replace the boot.

Given a thread I read over on the Samba (Benny of Montreal), there is a possibility that a given pre assembled/packed CV might be shy on amount of grease.

If it were me, and I went with pre assembled, I'd go with brand name parts, (Lobro?.... and not saying Ben didn't) then find a way to sneak (inject under small end of boot) a little more CV grease into each CV and massage it around.

Benny had a new pre assembled CV start clunking after not too many KM's (~ 30K?). Can't recall if due to a total lack of grease, or just not enough, but he said it was "dry".
