Screening for no-see-ums (midges, minges in Maine, or in Canada "sparks from Hell") is fine enough that it's a little hard to see through.

Been around them much of my life. I never understood the sparks from hell bit -- after all, they don't even try to get away, just touch your finger to them and they're dead; and the bite only lasts a half-hour or so -- until I got a beard full in the woods one day. Wow! The horseflies didn't bother us at all, they were all beating themselves senseless against the windshield of the pickup. There must have been over a hundred when we got back in, and they didn't even turn around and notice us.

My second notable experience was out in the Berkshires in Dutiful Passage, camping in a powerline cut. I was working outside in the dusk without my shirt, getting bitten but not paying too much attention. About 45 minutes later all those bites came together all at once, and I was crazy with pain and almost crying. I ran inside the van and made Sylvan miserable for half an hour, then it was all gone.
