Quite often a fuel pump makes noise (cavitates) due to fuel starvation. I had that problem, changed pumps several times, and finally dropped the fuel tank. It contained a lot of scale which was clogging the lines and starving the fuel pump. Cleaned the tank, replaced the old vent lines, and have not heard my fuel pump since.
