Many years ago ('60s), John Campbell, the then editor of Analog Science Fiction magazine, proposed in an editorial that the government specify and contract for a no-frills GI-standard automobile, and issue one to every enlisted bod in the military and the new ones as they entered. Maybe officers too, I forget. He thought various good things would come of it, mainly IIRC that practically nobody would be unable to afford a vehicle because of standardization savings on the initial vehicle cost and the development of an inexpensive used market as military folks bought cars they liked better when they could afford to.
